Clinical research reshapes nicotine regulation – new publication by BRG CEO

BioResearch Group (BRG) announces the publication of a new article by Dr Katarzyna Jarus-Dziedzic, CEO and Principal Investigator at BRG, exploring the evolving role of clinical research in nicotine product regulation.

The publication, titled “Clinical research reshapes nicotine regulation”, highlights a global shift in how regulators assess nicotine products – moving beyond traditional approaches based on composition and emissions towards comprehensive clinical evidence and real-world data.

Across key markets, including the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States, regulatory expectations are rapidly evolving. Authorities increasingly require robust data on user exposure, biomarkers, product use patterns, and long-term health impact, placing clinical research at the centre of the evaluation process.

The article also highlights the growing importance of behavioural insights and population-level impact. In particular, regulators such as the US FDA now assess not only individual risk but also the broader “net public health benefit,” including the potential effects on both adult smokers and youth populations.

Importantly, the publication reflects the increasing scrutiny of next-generation nicotine products, which are at the centre of both regulatory attention and public health debate. Diverging perspectives – from harm reduction potential to concerns about youth uptake – are shaping the direction of future policies.

As outlined in the article, clinical studies – including pharmacokinetics, toxicology, and real-world usage assessments – are becoming essential tools for demonstrating product safety, effectiveness, and harm reduction potential. At the same time, high-quality research infrastructure and regulatory-compliant study environments are gaining strategic importance.

This shift reflects a broader transformation of the industry, where scientific transparency and robust data increasingly shape regulatory decisions, public health policies, and the future of nicotine products.

At BRG, we actively contribute to this evolving landscape by conducting advanced clinical and observational studies across a wide range of nicotine products, supporting our partners with high-quality data aligned with international regulatory standards.
